The Grand Theft Auto series is known for its freedom of action, which includes unrestricted movement across vast territories, the ability to hijack any encountered vehicle, and the option to kill any non-player character (NPC) encountered. In creating GTA IV, the developers revamped many existing aspects and introduced several new features.
As in previous games in the series, the protagonist primarily undertakes criminal missions assigned by various in-game characters. Successfully completing these missions unlocks further missions, new areas of the city, new types of weapons, and more.
In addition to the 88 main story missions, the game traditionally includes additional side quests, although their number has significantly decreased compared to previous installments in the series. However, completing these side quests remains necessary for 100% completion of the game. These side missions include police missions, unique stunt jumps, vehicle theft missions, car races, assassination missions, searching for hidden items (in this case, pigeons), and various others.
