Sid Meier's Civilization

Sid Meier's Civilization is the first computer game in the Civilization series, developed by Sid Meier and Bruce Shelley at MicroProse and released in September 1991. The game is a turn-based strategy that combines elements of 4X, grand strategy, wargame, and open-world genres. In Civilization, the player makes key decisions in managing a civilization throughout historical time, from the Ancient World to modern times. The gameplay involves economics, politics, military actions, trade, exploration of new territories and technologies, with other civilizations serving as competitors. The game features a tile-based and procedurally generated map, cities with buildings, combat units, diplomacy, and a technology tree. Civilization was originally developed for the DOS platform and later ported to Windows, Macintosh, Amiga, Atari ST, PlayStation, and Super Nintendo. In 2002, Eagle Games released a board game version of Civilization. In 2005, Atari released a version for the N-Gage smartphone. Civilization had a significant impact on the development of strategic computer games, popularizing and shaping the 4X and turn-based strategy genres with political and economic simulation. It influenced dozens of games in the 1990s. Civilization was the first computer game to feature a technology tree and the first to encompass global-scale processes and the entire history of human civilization.
